Marist Football Code of Conduct

The success of a junior football club is measured more by the involvement and behaviour of its players, coaches and parents than simply by ‘the number of games won’. At the beginning of each year, it is timely to remind all of our players, coaches and parents of the following expectations.

Code of Conduct for Coaches

1. Be a positive role model – your attitude towards umpires and opposing teams will influence your players’ behaviour.

2. Develop team respect for the ability of opponents as well as for the judgement of officials and opposing coaches.

3. Encourage your players to play the game fairly and to the best of their ability.

4. Help players understand the responsibilities and implications of their freedom to choose between fair and unfair play.

5. Avoid over-playing the most talented players - the less talented players need and deserve equal time.

6. Be reasonable in your demands on young players’ time, energy and enthusiasm.

7. Create opportunities to teach appropriate sports behaviour as well as football skills.

8. Keep yourself informed of sound coaching principles and the principles of growth and development of young players.

Code of Conduct for Parents

1. Ensure that your child’s involvement is a positive football experience by encouraging your child’s endeavours.

2. Support your child’s coach and team mates.

2. Always respect and accept the decision of the umpire.

3. Display control, respect, dignity and professionalism to all involved with the sport.

4. Refrain from any form of verbal abuse towards umpires, opposition teams or opposition supporters.

5. Be a positive role model for your child - display good sportsmanship at all times.

Code of Conduct for Players

1. Always play by the rules.

2. Never argue with umpires or officials. If you disagree, discuss the matter with your coach.

3. Control your temper. Verbal abuse of umpires, officials or other players is unacceptable.

4. Cooperate with your coach and support and encourage all of your team mates. Both you and your team will benefit.

5. Respect the rights and dignity of all players regardless of their ability, cultural background or religion.

6. Play for your own enjoyment and benefit – not just to please parents and coaches
