Travis
Colyer is the latest ex Marist Player to be drafted into the
AFL.
On 26 November 2009 Travis was taken at pick 26 by the ESSENDON
Football Club. Travis has been allocated number 32 at Essendon.
Travis played all of his junior football for Marist between
1999 and 2007 covering a total of 8 seasons. His development as
a footballer at Marist and as a participant in the junior
development squads co-ordinated by the Claremont Football Club
was recognised in 2007 when Travis was selected in the Western
Australian State 16’s football team.
In 2008 Travis transferred from Marist and commenced his career
with the Claremont Football Club where in 2009 Travis was
rewarded for his outstanding form with selection in the Western
Australian State 18’s football team. This selection allowed
Travis to represent Western Australia in a total of 5 games with
the WA team being undefeated and winning the 2009 championship.
Travis’s personal contribution during the championship was
rewarded with selection in the 2009 Under 18’s All Australian
Team.
Travis’s form following the 2009 18’s championship was
recognised at Claremont with selection in the Claremont league
team for his debut game against Peel Thunder in round 16 on Sat
11 July 2009. Travis played a total of 3 league games for
Claremont in 2009 and he also was a member of the Colts team
which won the premiership in 2009.
Given an early opportunity at Essendon in 2010 Travis will
become the 10th person of the exclusive list of ex
Marist players who have played VFL / AFL.

Pat McGinnity
[jumper number 35] played all his junior football @ Marist &
followed on to Claremont colts in 2007 and now with the West
Coast Eagles.
His stellar 2007
season culminated in his selection as ‘centreman of the year’
for the WAFL colts’ team of the year and also saw
his elevation to the WA under 18's competition where he shone
particularly in the final game resulting in the all Australian
team. This form warranted his selection by the West Coast Eagles
in the pre season draft in December 2007.
The 2008 season
did not start well due to a arm injury sustained in a AFL pre
season game @ Alice Springs, though he worked through this
setback to make his WAFL debut with the Tigers in round 5 of the
2008 season V Peel Thunder @ Rushton Park.
Glandular fever
then struck Pat down in August 2008 when pressing for AFL
selection and prematurely ended his season.
The
2009 season started brightly with Pat’s selection in a pre
season game V Collingwood, though once again a setback with a
broken jaw sustained from a confrontation with Nick Maxwell,
however an earlier super goal was a great result for Marist as
this effort gained the Marist Football Club 10 new footballs.
His
strong performances at Claremont resulted in his AFL debut for
the West Coast Eagles V Saint Kilda round 15 July 12 2009
followed by some regular appearances with the Eagles thereafter.
We wish Pat well for the future. |

As
season 2009 rolls along it has been very pleasing for the Marist
FC to have 2 of our former juniors progress to AFL ranks, as a
club we are very proud of their achievements and it shows with
dedication and a good junior grounding that the pathway to the
AFL is there for all children.
Our two current AFL list players have achieved this year
some remarkable feats which deserve honour and recognition:
Pat McGinnity, Eagles listed player who in a pre-season NAB
cup game kicked a super-goal which resulted in our club
receiving footballs to the value of $1,000, thanks Pat from
your club.
Garry Moss, Hawthorn listed player who has had a great start
to the 2009 season and was rewarded for his efforts in
receiving one of the weekly “NAB Rising Star Awards” for
this our club received cash and prizes valued at $3,000 from
NAB.

Here is the Marist
SmokeFree policy. |
HISTORY OF MARIST FC
The nucleus of the club was formed in 1964 when
Marist College, then located in Salvado Road Subiaco, fielded a
team in the under 18 Subiaco District Junior Football Competition.
The college shifted to its present location at Churchlands in 1965
and by Marist teams were participating in all age groups of that
competition. It was at this stage that the first inaugural general
meeting of the club was held, with Laurie Ryan being elected first
President, a position he held until 1972. He was succeeded by Cliff
Costello (1973-74), Jim Doherty (1975-80), Barry Rubie (1981-82),
Fred Symons (1983-85), Perry Leach (1986-87), Bruce Nicholls (1988),
Rolf Bank (1989), Kevin Lukey (1990-2000), Tim Shifferli (2001-03),
Mark George (2004-08) and Kelvin Reynolds (2009 - current).

The Clubs tally of Premierships now stands at
33, 14 won in the Subiaco District (1964-1982), 2 won in the West
Perth District (1983), 5 in the Claremont District (1984-1990),
9 won in the Central Districts (1991-2004), 2 in the Claremont District
(2004-05) and 1 in the Fremantle Youth League (2005). Marists four
most successful teams were in the 1979,1982,1990 and 2002 seventeen’s
teams who each won three premierships.
A seventeen’s premiership is considered
by many as the ‘jewel in the crown’ of a junior football
club. Marist has won 14 seventeen’s flags in thirty two years
of competition. Altogether nine senior coaches have coached seventeen’s
premierships. Des Tuck (64,65,66) is the only one to coach three,
whilst three coaches have been successful twice, they are Tim McDonald
(72&77), Graham Duff (78 & 82), and Kevin Lukey (98 &
05). The other winning coaches are Brian Foley (70), Mal Green (90),
John Martin (99), Mathew Angus (02) and Rory Mitchell (03).
The seventeen’s of 2005 are the only team
to have won the coveted prize undefeated and the first Marist Team
to have won the Fremantle Youth League (inaugurated 2004) covering
more than one league zone.

The introduction of the expanded freeball (now
Auskick) competition in the late 80’s saw the numbers grow
from 11 in 1987 to 70 in 1988 and have since grown to 250 in 2006.
This has been responsible for lifting the club from recession in
junior football to it’s current position. Marist has won 5
of the last 8 seventeen’s Premierships due to this expansion
and good management.
The year 2007 in officially the 39th year of the
Marist Football Club. Many of the current executives and coaching
staff are themselves former Marist Players. The Black and Blue Guernsey
worn by the club is the original Marist College at New Norcia Guernsey
and was the official Guernsey at the inception of the Marist College
at Churchlands now known as Newman College. Marist Football Club
has a long and proud tradition in football in this state and has
had a profound affect on football in WA.
